Popis:
Lovely plant that was most surprising to see growing in the lawns which are mowed once a week, but that's a fact.
The Bulgarian story of Ophrys apifera is very interesting. It was first mention for the country by prof. J. Velenovsky in his Flora Bulgaria. Later on again in the 19th century it was seen in few places by Bulgarian botanists. Then the plant likely completely disappeared from sight and no recent records were known until the 1980s, when a photograph of it appeared in one popular book about the Bulgarian nature reserves. After 2000 new records start to emerge continuously from here and there. It is not common of course, but now there is a number of records. It is a puzzle how its "disappearance" in 20th century should be explained - it is a notable plant and in 20th century Bulgarian flora was explored by a good number of botanists, who would have noticed and recognized the plant have they met it. Also there was an extensive survey of the Bulgarian grasslands also done by prominent phytocoenologists and botanists, who wouldn't have failed noticing it. Apart from that there is a very good expert orchidologist in Bulgaria - Dr. A. Petrova, director of the National Botanical Garden. She is our best field botanist and she has spent long years browsing literally every part of the country, collecting an immense knowledge about our orchids. It is true that many orchids may spend years resting under the ground, but it is hard to believe that all the populations decided to rest at the same time for a whole century. So, it is still a mystery here to be solved.
